I have finally got my computer back and am therefore able to blog again. I missed my laptop!

So while I have been away from the computer a bit, I have been getting ready for the Leigh craft fair I am doing in December.

I have made lots of little bears, Christmas decorations, bunting, jewellery and I am still going. I will keep you updated with my progress and what happens along the way.

Block

I mentioned before my trip to the library to get some sewing/ dress making/ pattern making books. So I thought I would read up and try and work on improving some of the sewing I do and how I do it and hopefully learn a few things.

I decided I was gunna make a pattern block. I have been basing my patterns so far on a basic dress pattern and adjusting it, but haven't made a block that is just right. So I thought I would do it properly and follow the instructions.

I used a standard pattern sized up to make one set of blocks, I then followed this method of measuring the body and drawing it all out. I then adjusted this one on both my model and by trying it on myself.

This is my block so far on my model. It still needs a fair bit of work, cutting etc and then drawing out onto paper.

I have been doing a lot of pinning and adjusting to try and get it just right.

I think I might test this out, once it's finished, by making a black dress for work, so watch this space.

We have a plum tree in our garden, it's only a little one, but the amount of plums that we get off of it is amazing!

So we stewed somefor crumbles and froze them and I also made jam. It came out well, I even had it on toast this morning.

I've been to the library

I took a trip to the library as I have a bit of time over the next few weeks and wanted to get looking at some pattern books for dressmaking. I wanted to improve my techniques a bit and so I rummaged through the library for pattern making books.

Some of these books are better than others, some are a bit old.

But I have been looking at how to make blocks, there seems to be a couple of ways to do this, either following the mathematical approach or doing it on the model. Now I am trying a few different ones, a couple of the 'make it on paper' types and also using on the model ideas.

I'll keep you posted on how it all goes. So far I have been cutting out lots of versions of paper patterns on newspaper and have made up one in fabric and am altering it on the model I haveto get it just right.

I saw a picture of a cake I really wanted to make a while back, I just needed an occasion to make it. So my Nan's Birthday.

This is a test run, just to check it wouldn't be a total disaster at the last minute when I didn't have a back up plan (often a problem I have!!) But it wasn't and am quite happy.

I think I'm gunna make it in shades of green, my Nan's fav colour. There'll be pics of that 2, so fingers crossed it's successful.

I also got some icing tools when I was out shopping (it is what I used to do the icing on the cake), but I also wanted to try and make some chocolate shapes (another idea that I saw recently). I just did some test runs of hearts and stars, but worked ok. Just gotta make sure I don't get too impatient and touch them before they r properly dry!

I just tried them in my cake, think they look cute, might add these to the next cup cakes I make, now there's an idea!!

A day of making

If you have been here before or are a regular reader of my blog, u'll know by now that I love to make thing. It may be clothes, jewellery, sewing or it may be food, but I love to make.

So I spent a free day making lots of things in the kitchen. I made Ice cream (mint choc chip and chocolate), lemonade and macaroons. Yummy.

A new little eco owl

I recently made a little owl and I am now onto my second one.

This little owl is made from recycled fabrics and scraps left over from other projects. It is then stuffed with reused fabric as well. Totally eco and great for the environment, as well as totally cute (of course).

First step was to cut out the pattern pieces. I've gone for a pink theme this time.

I then sewed the wings together, then the front to the back, I did this before the appliqué and embroidery this time. (That's my little pin cushion that my Mum made me there!!)

Here is attack of the pins!! I pinned my fabric in place. There are a lot of pins because I had to fold over all the edges on the circles (not an easy task).

So all ready to sew...

I made my own little label. I have been meaning to make a little label to go on my items for ages. I have tried free sewing on my machine, but I def need some practise. So I hand sewed this one, that way it comes out the way I want it to.

This is my little owl just before stuffing, after sewing on the eyes, beak and detail.

Finished Office Dress

This is my finished office dress.

The top part I made from an old shirt, the bottom from a dress that I recycled. So totally eco and it came out well. Just a slight adjustment to do on the back and then I can wear it to work.

Very happy. It is nice to go from an idea/ picture of what you want to the final item.

Owl

Today I have been working on making an owl

I started off by doing some drawings of what I wanted to make and some ideas.

I then drew it out to actual size and cut it out for a template.

I then cut out the fabric pieces using the template.

This is all the pieces cut out and laid out where I want them.

Before stitching the back to the front, I sewed on all the detailed work, such as eyes, beak etc.

Then I did some sewing on my machine. This is the wing.

And I ended up with this:

Knitted jumper

I have finally finished my knitted jumper dress. I may have started it last winter, but at least it'll be ready for next winter right?!

Ok, so I have made quite a few items of clothing, have followed (and not followed patterns), admittedly being more successful when I do follow patterns. But inspired by something I saw on TV and a dress I've seen on the net, I got going on making my own pattern and dress.

First step was to make a pattern. I based it vaguely on part of a dress pattern I have used before. I had a bit of inspiration and made it from newspaper, then remade it.

Then was cutting it from fabric.

I made this from a dress that was not so successful and a man's shirt that was being thrown away.

I have been doing a lot of sewing and adjusting and this is where I am at now. There is a lot of work 2 go. Pins are still holding a lot of it together and some bits just aren't right. So I'll keep you posted.

Sewing Box

My Dad rescued this from a skip and I love it.

A proper old sewing box. Just had to fix some of the screws back in (with a little help from my Dad).

Now I use it for all sorts of sewing bits- ribbons, threads, buttons and bits and bobs.

Cake bites

Ok, so I have been quite excited looking through a new blog I found- Bakerella.com It has some amazing baking on there and some lovely ideas. So today I though- y not try one of them out. So I tried my hand at making cake balls.

Now here's how they should look:

So I baked a small cake (I didn't want to make too many all at once). I used one of my fav recipes, then crumbled it in a bowl and mixed it with a chocy icing.

I then rolled this in balls and laid on a sheet, so far so good. Quite easy and smooth so far!

Then came the chocolate coating. I started off by skewering them, but I broke a few of them in half, opps. So change of plan- I decided to use a spoon instead. Had a few problems, the first ones I dipped are covered in very thick chocolate and towards the end they are very thinly coated. Think I definitely need to do some perfecting of the technique!!

These are my very messy creations!! They are currently waiting to dry.

I am sure they will be yummy anyhow!

Customised Shoes

I decided I wanted some flat black pumps, but ones with a nice bit of detail to wear out in the evening. I couldn't find what I wanted in the shops, so I thought- Y not customise my own. So here's the results.

I made a flower from a netting lace ribbon that I had and then I added beads to the centre.

Organ Donation

I have just added myself to the organ donation list on the NHS.

I think a lot of people wouldn't mind if their organs were used when they die, but just never get around to actually adding themselves to the list, but it is really easy and quick to do and you can take yourself off at any time.

And to think that 1000 people every year die because they can't get a organ.

Heres what the NHS has to say:

'Would you take an organ if you needed one? Nearly everyone would. But only 29% of us have joined the Organ Donor Register.

More than 10,000 people in the UK currently need a transplant. Of these, 1000 each year – that's three a day - will die waiting as there are not enough organs available.

Heart Dress

I've been busy today making a new dress.

I have been planning this one for a while. I have seen a few of these heart cut out dresses about and love them and wanted to make myself one.

It wasn't as complicated as I first thought it might be and it turned out well.No major problems.

I faced all of the back where the heart is and the front as well and made the skirt quite full (I used almost all of the 2 metres of fabric that I bought).

Quite happy with the outcome tho and looking fwd to wearing it.

I wanted to make another new dress, so I found some fabric- a bargain at less than £2 a metre and got to work. I altered a pattern that I had used before, I added buttons at the front and made the skirt fuller.

I think I might even wear it with a belt. I think i'll try it on a few different ways and see...

Baby Cardi

This is the 2nd shirt I have made and after the first one came out Ok, I thought- y not make another. Saw this fabric and thought- perfect.

I also found this skirt and just had to take it up so that it was the right length, then I had my new work outfit sorted!

Ok, so I bought this new dress a while back and thought it was really cute, but it seemed a little short, so I have worn it with jeans, but it's not quite the same. But yesterday I discovered a new way to wear it. I used a black skirt as a layer underneath and now I am happy with it.

DIY Cake stand

Ok, so I really, and I mean really, wanted to get a cake stand, so I have been spending time (maybe too much time if I'm honest) looking at cake stands online and as yet I have not bought one. Altho I may still do. Once I started looking I found nicer and nicer ones and even tho I don't really need one, I may be getting a cake stand with a dome! We'll see, so watch this space!!

But in the mean time I saw that a few people had DIYed it and made their own out of various plates and vases etc, so I thought- y not give it a go and went on a rummage in the kitchen, and heres what I came up with. Not bad I don't think. Tho I would like it to be higher, but u can't have everything!

I used a white dish and an upturned little bowl, doesn't look too bad even if I do say so myself!

This took at bit of work, but this is the newest dress I've made and very happy with it.

I thought this might have been one of the mistakes that I told myself that at least I learned something from, but it actually turned out ok.

I love the idea of a journal and what better than a recipe journal?!

This was actually a christmas pressie and I love it. I did have a recipe book that I wrote all my fav recipes in before, but it was just a standard note book.

But now I have a pretty book, and as u can see it already has loads of bits of scrap paper with recipes on them and recipes cut out of magazines tucked inside, yet to be tried and tested! (to see if they make it into the book).

I saw an outfit that I loved online and I wanted it. So what do you do when you want something- make it of course, then u can have it in ur own size, colour etc.

Well anyway, I am half way to my outfit. I have made the top. I made this from an old top that didn't fit right. I have also ordered some turquoise fabric for a skirt I want to make. So watch this space for that one.

As you can see I have tried this top with several outfits.

Just waiting for summer now! Roll on summer :)

Not sure I agree with having one day a year when it should be. It's like everything if you want to celebrate it u'll do it when u want to.

Light Drawing

I have recently discovered the art of light drawing.

I have always thought it was cool when you write your name in light or draw shapes in the air with a torch on a slow shutter speed, but recently when I looked into I have seen so many beautiful images made in this way. This is something I definatly want to experiment with, especially since I just got a new camera as well.

This is my first experiment, not bad. Just need to try lots of different ideas out now!

Busy busy today. I finished off the dress I made last weekend, I added buttons and altered the hem.

I also made another dress, this time one for the summer. I used the same pattern that I used for my previous floral blue dress, but made it from some pretty strawberry and toadstools fabric that I found online.

It needs some finishing, I need to line it as it is a little see through (or at least it would be in the sunlight!) I have just ordered some lining online today (along with some other new fabrics- I want to make a new skirt and a little shirt for work as well). I am also going to add some pink buttons to finish it off, but am very pleased with it!

Just made a new necklace- daisy chains.

I tried out letter stamping a while back and had not until now made use of it. So I cut out these little flowers from aluminium and made a pretty necklace.

Another New dress

Made another new dress, I think I'm on a roll. And they are all going well!

I wanted to make a dress that I could either wear in the winter with leggings and a top or as a summer dress and here it is.

Now I want to now find some more fabric and make another one!

I adjusted it slightly from the pattern because I wanted it stretchy and without a zip, so I shirred the back, a first for me and it went fantastically well, no problems at all. I will be using shirring again.

It fits just right and I added a couple of buttons which finish it off nicely.

I just finished making this dress yesterday, I have just got to sew up the hem and it is all done.

I'm just trying to decide- straps or no straps?!

This is also the first piece of fabric I have bought online, so very happy, opens up a whole new world of fabrics. There are not enough fabric shops about!

First attempt at making a shirt

This is my first attempt at making a shirt, something which I haven't tried before because it seemed to complicated, but seeing as I have made a jacket I thought- why not give it a go! So I did and here are the results. I am very happy with it.

The pattern caused me some issues as it was far too big for me, but with some adjustments it came out great! Very happy.

And also it was all made from an old shirt! Even better. I do love my reusing and recycling.

I decided to make another little bag, but a knitted one this time. Thought it might look quite cute.

So I started knitting, I did it in a cable pattern. I sewed it all together and lined it and added a handle. I also made a little crochet flower and added a pearl to the centre.

I saw this pattern and just wanted to make them, they are some cable slipper socks and I am happily wearing them now.

Bag

I decided I wanted to make a new bag, so I sorted thru all my fabrics and then decided what colours and fabrics to use.

So heres the little bag I made. I then sewed on a little owl.

Handmade Holiday

If you hadn't noticed already, I love to make stuff, all sorts of stuff and keeping with this theme I am making lots of holiday makes and gettin ready for the Christmas season. The build up is always the most fun!

So far I have already made a reindeer, some little robins, a Christmas bag, some socks and don't worry because I have lots more plans. I will be making lots of sweets and biscuits nearer the time too and wrapping them up beautifully.

As well as making lots of Christmassy things, I love to buy handmade too, I love to browse online and find something unique and perfect for all the people I love.

So busy busy, but lots of fun too.

Through the viewfinder pics

I have always loved to take photographs and I have had a fascination with photographs that are either poloroids or more recently- through the viewfinder pictures. I think they can look amazing! So obviously I have been experimenting.

I take all my pics on a digital camera and have done for years now, so I have been playing with effects in photoshop to get the look I wanted. It wasn't easy, but I got there. :)

Knitted Christmas socks

I have made socks before (not as complicated as it sounds) but this is my first attempt at patterned socks.

The first sock I made looked ok, but I had a bit of a problem in that it wasn't stretchy (due to the 'floats' as apparently their called, which stopped it stretching) so this became a stocking instead, a nice stocking though!

So second attempt I looked up about floats and pattern knitting to get some tips on what to do about the problem. Now one sock down and almost through the next, and they are now stretchy yipeee!

Heres where I started:

I have been busy making lots of chutneys this week. I started off with a tomatoe chutney, my fav I think.

I then made a spicy apple chutney

Then- my first attemp at lemon curd, came out well, reminds me of lemon meringue pie! And look how yellow it is, no colouring or anything.
